MERSEY MARITIME NEWS
NEW MARKETS 2 – SME BUSINESS SUPPORT PROGRAMME
Mersey Maritime has successfully bid for European funding to run a business support programme for a limited number of fast-growing SMEs. We are currently conducting eligibility checks on a number of businesses signing up to the programme – but there’s space for a few more. We know for a fact that around 85 per cent of businesses in the Merseyside cluster fit the basic SME definition, i.e. they have a registered business address on Merseyside, employ fewer than 250 staff and have an annual turnover of under €50million. If your business can also demonstrate 20 per cent growth across the past three years and could use support for innovation and/or to bring new products or services to market, leading to growth, please get in touch. The New Markets 2 programme is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and matched by Mersey Maritime, so is available at no financial cost to your business. Please email Mersey Maritime’s funding manager at email@example.com
MERSEY MARITIME EVENTS
Our programme of events is getting ever busier as we settle into the Maritime Knowledge Hub (MKH) and roll out a varied programme of network events, export club meetings, industry workshops and business surgeries that are designed to offer something for everyone. We email details regularly but please also keep an eye on our website events page to see everything at a glance. Events coming up in October include tours of NERC’s research vessel RRS Discovery (6 Oct); a high level reception at the MKH for shipping minister John Hayes (20 Oct); and a ‘Panama in Liverpool’ themed Export Club (26 Oct). SEATRUCK ADD FOURTH VESSEL TO LIVERPOOL-DUBLIN FREIGHT SERVICE
Irish Sea freight specialist Seatruck is to add a fourth vessel to its Liverpool-Dublin service. The Clipper Ranger will commence operations next week (week commencing 10 Oct), enhancing the busy midweek period with four departures each way per day. Seatruck’s Liverpool-Dublin route is the fastest growing freight service on the Irish Sea, growing at roughly three times market level. CEO of Seatruck Ferries Alistair Eagles said: “Our growth this year on the Liverpool Dublin route has been strong but we are not resting on our laurels or sitting back. We have a firm belief in our business model, a strong team and the right infrastructure in place to take this next step.” He added: “With four sailings each way per day, Seatruck will offer an unrivalled freight-only frequency between Liverpool and Dublin, allowing more operators to switch away from the traditional driver-accompanied transit through Wales or Scotland.” www.seatruckferries.com
REBRANDED ENGINEERING COLLEGE LAUNCHES IN BIRKENHEAD
Merseyside’s leading engineering college has unveiled a new company brand following a £500,000 refurbishment that was part-funded through Liverpool City Region’s Growth Deal. The newly rebranded Engineering College was formerly known as the Laird Foundation and since 2008 as Maritime & Engineering College North West. It is based next to Cammell Laird in Monk’s Ferry, Birkenhead. Founded in 1998, the college has a turnover of £1.7m and 38 staff, and serves clients including Cammell Laird, Balfour Beatty, Clarke Energy, Sovex and Laker Vent. Engineering College CEO Terry Weston aims to double the size of the college over five years, plugging the ‘massive engineering skills shortage’ in the region. He said: “The College has been very successful but our profile needs to be higher and we want to be better understood by the marketplace. This is why we have rebranded. Historically we have been seen wrongly as working mainly in the maritime industry. Our offer is much broader, we can train apprentices and staff across sectors including construction, nuclear, petrochemical, renewables, oil and gas and the NHS – as well as maritime.” The Engineering College is the only dedicated engineering skills college in the region, providing a range of 20 high skill craft and technician training routes to becoming qualified in engineering that it says are simply not offered at any other college. www.mecnw.co.uk
