It subsidises services bus operators find unprofitable to run. This includes vital links to schools, hospitals and industrial estates, and the Merseylink service for people with mobility problems.

It funds and specifies service levels on the Merseyrail network. It also sets fare levels and invests in developing new stations and refurbishing older ones.

It provides and funds free travel passes to the elderly and disabled.

It operates pre-paid ticketing, eg Trio, Solo, Trioplus, Railpass and Saveaway, with the bus and rail operators.

It operates the Traveline which is open 7am - 8pm on Mondays to Fridays and 8am - 8pm Saturdays and Sundays.

It maintains over 6,000 bus stops including over 2,400 shelters and major bus stations throughout Merseyside.

It owns and operates the famous Mersey Ferries and the Mersey Tunnels.
