MERSEY MARITIME NEWS
MERSEY MARITIME SIGNS GROUND-BREAKING MoU WITH LJMU
Our big news this week has been the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Liverpool John Moores University, in an exciting move to cement some key areas of work our two organisations have been developing in the first months of 2015 and pave the way to future close collaboration. Click here to read the story in full.
We couldn’t send out an e-zine today without acknowledging one of the most significant maritime events to take place in Liverpool for quite some time: the much anticipated arrival into Liverpool this weekend of Cunard’s majestic Three Queens. And what better way to start than with a competition and some pretty special prizes:
COMPETITION: WIN THREE QUEENS COMMEMORATIVE MERCHANDISE
Recognising the very long-established bonds between Liverpool and the Isle of Man, the Isle of Man Post Office has kindly offered Mersey Maritime some official Three Queens commemorative products as prizes for a little social media competition. In return, we are drawing your attention to their website, which showcases the full range of Three Queens products available to order. The range, developed in collaboration with Cunard and marine artist Robert G Lloyd, celebrates the arrival into Liverpool this Bank Holiday weekend of Cunard’s three biggest cruise ships: the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Victoria and the Queen Mary 2. To be in with a chance of winning, you need to follow us on Twitter @Mersey_Maritime and answer this simple question on the Mersey Maritime twitter page: Q: What is the length in metres of the Queen Mary 2? Answers will be accepted up to 23:59 hours on 25 May after which winners will be chosen at random from all correct answers received. We have prizes to give away from across the full range.

THREE QUEENS BALLET
The visit to Liverpool this weekend by Cunard’s ‘Three Queens’ will see significant numbers of maritime sector companies involved in this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle, not to mention upwards of a million spectators on both sides of the river. One such organisation is the Mersey Pilots, whose job it will be to guide the giant liners as they sail up the Mersey together on Bank Holiday Monday in celebration of Cunard’s 175th anniversary. For the Woodside based pilot service the events of 25 May have been almost two years in the planning. Using a simulator, the team were given free rein to formulate, in the words of Event Leader Chris Booker: “some manoeuvres in the river that we thought we could do and would look quite dramatic.” Chris added: “All the manoeuvres, which have been likened to a waterborne ballet, are dependent on good weather on the day.” Fingers crossed, then….

BIRKENHEAD FIRMS IPS & MPE COMPLETE REFIT WORK FOR STENA SUPERFAST X VESSEL
Birkenhead based firms IPS Marine Fabrications and MPE Interiors have both recently completed work on board the new Stena Superfast X ro-pax ferry. Engineering firm IPS, run by partners Paul Smith and Peter Hillan, has delivered a package of insulation and fabrication work for the new ferry, including wide scale stainless steel fabrication upgrades to canteen and galley areas. Paul Smith said: “We initially carried out a complete inspection of the ship’s insulation pads (and) identified a total of 240 insulation pads which required replacing, many of which were oil-soaked. We manufactured the replacement pads at our site in Birkenhead and installed them across the vessel. Another key element of the project involved refurbishment to the galley and canteen areas providing stainless steel hand rails and serving units.”
Ship fit-out firm MPE Interiors supplied more than 30 men to work on the same vessel refit. MPE director John Whetnall said: “Main works we undertook included upgrading the crew mess and accommodation areas as well as the family lounge which includes a children’s play area.” MPE also manufactured a range of furniture and fittings as well as upholstery for seating. This latest MPE contract cements a two-year working relationship with Stena Line. MPE has turnover in excess of £2m and employs more than 30 staff at its manufacturing base in Birkenhead.
The Stena Superfast X holds 1200 passengers and 660 cars. IPS and MPE supplied services as part of an extensive refit in Gdynia, Poland, before the ferry started service between Holyhead and Dublin in March. www.ipsmarine.co.uk/ www.mpeinteriors.com
