Mersey Maritime hosts Maritime UK’s second board meeting outside London

By Annette Parker

Maritime UK is holding only its second ever board meeting outside of London today (Friday) in Liverpool at the home of Mersey Maritime – the representative body of the maritime sector in the North West.

Mersey Maritime joined the Board of Maritime UK last year and was the only cluster to be invited to the board meeting.

Chief Executive of Mersey Maritime Chris Shirling-Rooke now chairs the Maritime UK Cluster Group, a sub-committee of the main Board.

Talking about the visit, Mr Shirling-Rooke said: “It’s fantastic to be given the opportunity to host today’s Maritime UK board meeting. We welcomed the Board to Liverpool yesterday evening (Thursday) and have been showing them the regeneration that has been happening here in the city. We have also been able to offer our members the opportunity to meet and present their business ideas to the Chairman of Carnival UK, David Dingle.”

Board members from Maritime UK and key Mersey Maritime guests attended a drinks reception on Thursday evening followed by a private dinner hosted by financial planning and investment firm Tilney, prior to visiting Liverpool John Moores University and the University’s Ships Bridge and Engine Room Simulators this morning (Friday).

Key Mersey Maritime guests including Sir Michael Bibby, Vice-President of the Supervisory Board of the UK Chamber of Shipping, and Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson, also attended the event.

Local SMEs were also give the chance to attend and meet with Chairman of Maritime UK and Carnival UK, giving them the opportunity to present their own business ideas to Mr Dingle.
