CONTRACT SIGNED FOR CAMMELL LAIRD TO BUILD NERC’S NEW £200M POLAR RESEARCH SHIP
Birkenhead shipyard Cammell Laird has sealed the deal on the construction of the government-funded Natural Environment Research Council’s new £200m polar research vessel. The contract was signed on 20 November, triggering the start of the detailed design work. Full production will start in June next year running through to 2019 when the vessel will go into operation, operated by NERC’s British Antarctic Survey (BAS). The ship will be one of the most sophisticated floating research laboratories operating in the Polar Regions, able to endure up to 60 days in sea-ice to enable scientists to gather more observations and data. Cammell Laird CEO John Syvret said: “Signing this contract is another great day and proud moment for myself and the company. It is tremendous news for Merseyside and the UK maritime industry.” Mr Syvret added: […] “We would like to thank the Chancellor George Osborne for recognising that Cammell Laird is a champion brand for British industry and that we can play a key role in the development of the Northern Powerhouse, driving growth in marine engineering and the renewable and civil nuclear energy markets.”
The new contract is expected to secure 400 jobs at Cammell Laird and a further 100 jobs within the local supply chain. www.cammell-laird.com www.nerc.ac.uk

PEEL SECURES FIRST 50 ADVOCATES FOR CARGO 200 INITIATIVE TO CUT ROAD MILES
Port of Liverpool operator Peel Ports has secured the first 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North West to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May 2015, Peel is calling for importers and exporters whose goods begin or end their journey in the north of the UK, to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight miles by 200m miles over the next five years and could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs. JCB, B&M, Jaguar Land Rover and Warrant Group are among the first 50 customers to respond to the initiative, encouraging the UK freight and logistics industry to deliver a fundamental shift in supply chain and services routes.
