COMPLETE SITE SAFETY TRIPLES TURNOVER AFTER SECURING BUSINESS WITH DONG ENERGY
Liverpool offshore safety training specialist Complete Site Safety has tripled its turnover in a year after securing a major new client. The firm, which was established in October 2013 and is a finalist for SME of the Year in the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards, secured contracts with DONG Energy, the world leader in offshore wind power, after meeting company representatives during IFB 2014. The new contract helped CSS grow turnover from £230,000 in 2014 to £680,000 last year. CSS director Tom Powell said: “Securing DONG Energy as a client was important not just because of the revenue that deal delivered but also because of the credibility DONG Energy’s name lent to our new business. “It’s no exaggeration to say that IFB2014 helped to turbo-charge our business growth and was a key factor in our success.” www.completesitesafety.co.uk

LIVERPOOL EYES PERMANENT CRUISE LINER BUILDING
Liverpool City Council has announced plans to build a permanent cruise liner building in Liverpool. The news follows a doubling in the number of vessels visiting Liverpool since it became a turnaround facility, up from 31 in 2012 to an expected 61 in 2016. The council will commission a detailed study into the construction of a permanent passenger handling facility at the former Princes Jetty at Princes Parade, which is close to the landing stage. Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said: “The temporary cruise liner building has been a tremendous success and served us well, but a city of Liverpool’s standing and ambition needs a permanent building if we are to continue the growth we’ve seen in recent years.”
The cruise liner terminal is estimated to have generated £7m for the city’s visitor economy last year, up from £1.3m when it was a port-of-call destination. Cruise operator Cunard has also welcomed the news, which could eventually lead to the reintroduction of the liner’s transatlantic crossings from the city. www.cruise-liverpool.com

NATIONAL MARINE SAFETY BOATS RACE TO THE RESCUE
A sailor was rescued from the Mersey on 7 February after his yacht lost power due to engine problems and he became seriously ill with seasickness exacerbated by diabetes. First on the scene was safety boat Deependant, operated by Wirral based National Marine Safety Boats, whose crew were alerted by radio. The safety boat was already in the area, providing cover for the Liverpool2 development, and provided assistance until an RNLI lifeboat arrived to convey the casualty back to dry land. The yacht was recovered by Merseyside Fire Brigade’s Marine Fire One rescue RIB.

Elsewhere, National Marine has also been involved as a sub-contractor in work to rebuild the 300-year old Pooley Bridge in the Lake District following its collapse in the December floods. Jon Henshaw, MD of National Safety Boats said: “It’s hard to believe that just a couple of months ago Storm Desmond destroyed the 300-year-old bridge. National Marine Safety Boats is very proud to be part of the team helping to rebuild it.” Pictures of both events are at: https://www.facebook.com/SAFETYBOATS/

Meanwhile, Bibby Line Group’s distribution division is urging the local community to take a fresh look at its Costcutter supermarket in Wallasey, Wirral, which has been fully refitted. The refit is part of a trial to change the focus from forecourt fuel to the instore fresh food and Food-to-Go offer, which, if successful, could eventually be rolled out to other sites. SHIPPING LINES OFFER TO PUBLISH MORE DETAIL ON CONTAINER RATES
Shipping lines have this month offered to improve the transparency of freight prices in response to concerns raised by the European Commission. Under a scheme proposed by 15 of the world’s major container shipping lines, future price announcements would include five main elements of the total price: base rate, bunker charges, security charges, terminal handling charges and peak season charges. The commission disapproves of the current system, known as General Rate Increases (GRI), which it argues breaches EU competition law. It is now seeking feedback on the commitments offered by the shipping lines. Interested parties have one month to comment on the proposals. Click here for the full story.
