MERSEY MARITIME NEWS

It’s the Friday before another bank holiday and we’d like to see you off on your long weekend with a quick round up of news in and around the Liverpool City Region’s maritime and related sectors.

Our city region is buzzing with good news connected to the opening later this year of Peel’s Liverpool2 container terminal – new shipping routes, new infrastructure to support business growth at the port and the wider hinterland, growth in the number of cruise vessels visiting the city, innovatively designed new tonnage, even. For our part, the Mersey Maritime team has begun hosting industry-focused events in our new home at the Maritime Knowledge Hub, designed to become a centre of excellence for innovation, education and skills, innovation and R&D, all of which are vital for building business confidence, growth and success. If you’d like to come and see what it’s all about, keep your eyes on our website, follow us on Twitter, get involved and be part of the story.

Lastly, thanks to our key stakeholders who were able to join us in London earlier this week to listen to our ‘journey report’ to UK Shipping Minister Robert Goodwill MP, on the Maritime Knowledge Hub and a new study that underpins its development. In advance of publication of the report next month, we were able to share headline data on the impact of the marine and maritime sector to the Liverpool City Region economy and the forecast growth. Further details on publication of the report will be announced shortly to coincide with the International Festival for Business 2016 (more of which below). In the meantime, sit back, take a break for five minutes and read on….

CMA CGM DOUBLES CAPACITY ON LIVERPOOL FEEDER
CMA CGM has increased the capacity on its West Coast feeder service via Liverpool from 900 TEU to 2200 TEU. M.V. Nicolas Delmas began calling at the port in April as part of a service that also calls at Antwerp, Greenock, Belfast, Dublin and Le Havre. Patrick Walters, Group Commercial Director at Peel Ports, said: “This is yet another encouraging step as we build up to the opening of Liverpool2 in the summer. The message about the cost, congestion and carbon emission benefits to cargo owners of shipping via Liverpool is really taking hold and the lines are responding to the market opportunity.”
Rob Waterman, CEO of CMA CGM UK, said: “This increase is a response to clear demand from our customers and we see the potential for significant growth via Liverpool. This additional capacity, along with our fast transit times and frequent sailing schedules, will help them get their goods closer to market more efficiently.”
It is the latest in a series of positive developments for the Port of Liverpool operators Peel Ports with several other major lines announcing new or expanded services in 2016.
The company’s new Liverpool2 container terminal is to have a phased opening, becoming fully operational this autumn. http://www.peelports.co.uk/
