100 CARGO OWNERS SIGN UP FOR PEEL PORTS CAMPAIGN TO CUT HAULAGE MILES
Peel Ports has reached the halfway mark in its Cargo200 campaign, with 100 advocates now signed up to the port operator’s initiative, launched in 2015, to cut 200 million road and rail freight miles by 2020. Among the latest names to provide their support are leading TV and internet retailer QVC, The Real Good Food Company and Ultimate Products, which sources and distributes branded consumer goods from 27 countries to more than 450 high-street retailers in the UK. It is now urging other cargo owners in the North West to add their weight to a campaign that encourages importers and exporters to ship through Liverpool and help create a sustainable shift in the UK logistics sector.

MAERSK SUBSIDIARY SEAGO LINE INTRODUCES NEW VESSEL TO LIVERPOOL SERVICE
Seago Line, a subsidiary of the Maersk Group, has introduced a new vessel, The Independent Accord, to its feeder service calling at Liverpool. The service between Algeciras-Liverpool-Dublin offers a six-day transit time, with vessels arriving and departing Liverpool on Wednesdays. The 1,579 TEU Independent Accord replaces the 1,100 TEU Antwerp, which has operated the route since April. The return to Liverpool in April was the first time that the Maersk Group Company had used the port for UK cargoes in over 10 years and is its first ever direct connection to the Irish capital. Patrick Walters, Commercial Director at Peel Ports, said: “We were very pleased that Seago Line and Maersk returned to Liverpool, signalling their confidence in the port, especially in the run up to the opening of Liverpool2. We’re even more delighted that this has proven to be a solid business move so quickly after the service started. It is another sign that industry-leading carriers are increasingly convinced of the arguments around the benefits of shipping closer to market via the North West.”
The Liverpool2 terminal began handling its first containers earlier this month, with Phase 1 expected to become fully operational from the autumn. www.liverpool2.com

HYDRAULICS SPECIALIST V&A COMPLETES FORD MOTORS PIPEWORK PROJECT
Birkenhead based V&A Hydraulics has completed a highly prestigious contract to service 200m of hydraulic pipework at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in Essex, one of the UK’s largest automotive R&D centres. V&A Hydraulics was set up in Birkenhead in 2002 by Vic Seddon and Alison Carmichael as a specialist in hydraulics installation, service and repair. Mr Seddon said: “We have experience delivering work at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre going back many years. This particular job was secured due to our track record delivering high quality services for Ford. The maintenance project involved heavy duty pipework which is out of the remit for Ford’s internal maintenance crew, so we were called in.” He continued: “The hydraulic pipe sizes ranged greatly from 57mm to 140mm diameter requiring specialist experience and knowledge to handle. We stripped out the pipework, replaced the seals, put it all back and then tested it to make sure it was working efficiently.” www.vahydraulics.com
