LIVERPOOL2 SUPER CRANES ARRIVE IN MERSEY
Peel Ports has taken delivery of the first five of eight ‘megamax’ quay cranes from China, destined for the port operator’s new deep water container terminal, Liverpool2. The new cranes, whose arrival on the Mersey earlier this month was captured by drone footage, can be seen here. Their arrival marks a significant milestone in Peel’s £300m investment in the new terminal, which will be able to handle 90% of the world’s largest container ships, including so-called ‘mega-ships’ of up to 20,000 TEU. SHIPPING GIANT ACL TO ‘CHRISTEN’ FIRST OF ITS NEW G4 FLEET IN LIVERPOOL
Atlantic Star, the first of container line ACL’s new fleet of five G4-class vessels, will visit Liverpool to be officially ‘christened’, the North American-based line has confirmed. SEATRUCK ADDS THIRD VESSEL TO LIVERPOOL – DUBLIN ROUTE
Seatruck Ferries, the Irish Sea freight specialist, will add a third vessel to its Liverpool Dublin route, from 17 November 2015. The additional midweek service comes in response to customer feedback and will provide much-needed peak capacity on a route that is attracting increased unaccompanied traffic, reducing road mileage compared with transit through Wales or Scotland. As economic conditions improve, the additional service is the next stage in Seatruck’s strategic development plan. Seatruck CEO Alistair Eagles said: “2016 will be a pivotal year for Seatruck with not only the additional capacity on this route but with the opening of the M6 [motorway] link, which will be a game changer for the development of our routes from the Port of Heysham.”
Seatruck Ferries was established in 1996 and operates 3 routes on the Irish Sea. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Danish Clipper Group A/S. www.seatruckferries.com

McTAYS YARD REVIVED BY MARITIME FAMILY FIRM CARMET
Former Bromborough shipyard McTay Marine has been brought back to life following liquidation of the McTay operation earlier this year. The slipway had been operated by McTay’s since 1974, providing a range of maintenance, refurbishment and small shipbuilding services. The new owners, Capt Ian Metcalfe, his son, Capt Brett Metcalfe, and his son, Capt Joshua Metcalfe – the family business that owns Carmet Tugs – have restarted ship repair operations with the backing of banking group Santander, and aim to double job numbers at the yard in the next 12 months. So far, the new business has created 17 jobs, mostly former McTay staff. Capt Brett Metcalfe said: ““We can bring vessels up the slipway of up to 1,200 tonnes and we are operational now. We are putting the word out now that we are here.”
Carmet had used the McTay facilities for quite a few years, said Capt Metcalfe, adding that: “The opportunity came to buy it and we thought it would enhance what we already do. It was an opportunity we could not let go by.” www.carmetmarine.co.uk

LV SHIPPING TRANSPORTS LONGEST WIND TURBINE BLADE EVER SHIPPED FROM THE USA
Mersey Maritime member LV Shipping Ltd has transported one of the world’s longest wind turbine blades from the USA to the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult’s (formerly NAREC) test facility in Blyth, UK. At over 78m long and weighing over 30 tonnes the prototype blade was assembled at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and is now at Blyth for a planned six month testing programme. Operational, engineering and HSQE staff from LV’s offices in Houston, Holland and the UK were all involved in the planning of the project. LV Shipping’s UK Sales Director Kevin Walsh said: “Managing the safe transit of the longest blade ever shipped from the USA to the UK via Antwerp was a real test of LV Shipping’s global expertise in freight forwarding. The project required meticulous coordination and good communication with all parties at every stage, which I’m delighted to say we achieved without incident.” To appreciate the sheer size of the blade, click here to see images of it in transit. www.lvshipping.com

GREEN SHOOTS OF SUCCESS ON SUPPLY CHAIN DATA PIPELINE PROJECT
“This is an absolute game changer, if we can have advance data regularly we can provide a ‘green lane’ for legitimate traders and focus resource on other areas.”
That was just some of the reaction from major stakeholders following initial results of a project supported by Liverpool based Warrant Group to demonstrate the benefits of advance high quality data in dynamic ‘end-to-end’ international supply chains. Warrant is one of three supply chain management companies providing expertise to help develop and demonstrate an electronic ‘data pipeline’ conforming to international standards. The four-year European funded project, CORE work package 10, aims to prove that good supply chain visibility and advance data can help businesses reduce risk, predict cost, react faster to market conditions and give them the confidence to deliver innovation and quality. David Roff, IT Director at Warrant Group, said: “As a result of our collaborative work so far, importers are now reviewing how they can de-risk their supply chains to reduce unnecessary stoppages by providing better quality data at source, such as complete HS codes and clear product descriptions. WARRANT GROUP SUPPORTS CARGO200 CAMPAIGN
In other news, Warrant Group is also supporting Cargo200 – a campaign launched by peel Ports to bring greater volumes of ocean freight through the Port of Liverpool to ease pressure on the UK’s roads and reduce carbon emissions. Warrant Group is among 200 members of the supply chain and logistics sector to have joined the campaign, which aims to take 200 million miles of freight transportation off the UK’s road and rail infrastructure by 2020. Ian Jones, MD of Warrant Group, said: “We are delighted to pledge our support to Cargo200 […]. Innovative logistical thinking is at the heart of what we do at Warrant Group,” he added, “and Liverpool2 opens up a wide range of exciting new ways to drive efficiencies and ultimately give our clients the competitive edge in their own marketplaces.” www.warrant-group.com
