By Mersey Maritime

There’s a real feeling of optimism in the air around here, as evidenced once again by the sheer amount of good news that comes our way from businesses operating in the Maritime Logistics and Energy sectors here on Merseyside and across the North West. It’s one the reasons why we’re proud to be launching the Mersey Maritime Industry Awards this month in celebration of a thriving and richly diverse sector whose interest we have the privilege to represent.

MERSEY MARITIME INDUSTRY AWARDS – 12 MARCH 2015
If you attended our MLE grand gala dinner in June 2014 as part of the International Festival for Business, then we hope you’ll want to be with us when we do it all again next March. As we launch our brand new Industry Awards this week to recognise and celebrate the work and achievements of businesses right across the MLE sectors, you can download further details and an application pack from our website. Please also keep the evening of 12 March 2015 free in your diaries.

FLYNN REFRIGERATION REPORTS 30PC TURNOVER SURGE AND STRONGEST EVER YEAR OF TRADE
Birkenhead-based Flynn Refrigeration is reporting its strongest year of trade with turnover surging by 30pc from £2m in 2013 to £2.6m, and a boost in international work. The firm delivers the complete refrigeration and air-conditioning package for marine, industrial and energy sectors – including supply, installation and maintenance services. MD Alex Flynn said: “This sustained period of growth has been driven in the main by our work in the global maritime sector. New contracts have been secured across the commercial, leisure, energy and offshore markets. They include high-profile deals with some of the world’s leading shipping operators, and the supply of equipment for use on harbour boats, bulk-carriers, offshore vessels and cruise ships.” Flynn Refrigeration operates from a 7,500ft head office and storage unit. It employs 11 staff on site and a team of sub-contractors working in shipyards across the globe. The company is currently working to secure a series of servicing agreements by partnering with engineers in major international ports in a move to enhance its global reach. www.flynnrefrigeration.co.uk

HUGH BAIRD COLLEGE TO OFFER IoE TRAINING TO BOOST MARITIME INDUSTRY SKILLS
The Institute of Export’s (IOE) internationally accredited courses are to be taught at the Port Academy Liverpool, as part of a drive to increase careers in the maritime industry. The IOE’s International Trade and Logistics Operations and the Young International Trader will both be on the curriculum at the new academy, which will specialise in port operations and maritime logistics training when it opens this September. Based within Bootle’s Hugh Baird College, the joint initiative will help address the UK’s skills shortage in the port and sea industries, which is facing a shortfall of 5,000 staff over the next few years. Port Academy Liverpool project lead Shulah Jones, said: “Our business model is to create a valued relationship between brokers and industry to make sure our courses work for employers – which is why our partnership with the Institute of Export is so important. The IOE offers globally recognised qualifications and shares our aim to engage young people and encourage them to consider careers in maritime logistics.” For more information about the IOE’s courses see www.export.org.uk or www.portacademyliverpool.com

LIVERPOOL-BASED ISP LAUNCHES PIONEERING NEW LIFEJACKETS
International Safety Products (ISP) is launching a series of new pioneering lifejackets fitted with self-alerting systems to aid rescue missions. The Bootle firm, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of marine inflatable lifejackets, has partnered with maritime communications specialist Ocean Signal to integrate the rescueME MOB1 device into three models of lifejackets. These will be officially launched at the upcoming METS maritime trade show in Amsterdam. The rescueME MOB1 is the world’s smallest AIS (Automatic Identification System). It activates automatically when a lifejacket is inflated, communicating with vessels within a five-mile radius and also linking to a rescue satellite network, helping to pinpoint the location of the user. ISP commercial director Geoff Billington said: “Supplying lifejackets with standard AIS is a new concept in the leisure and commercial maritime sectors.” He added: “The development […] brings together the best in British lifejacket manufacturing and maritime communication technology into one seamless design. www.ispl.co.uk

MPE INTERIORS IN PARTNERSHIP TO INSTALL FAST-FIT MODULAR SHIP ACCOMMODATION
Birkenhead-based fit-out contractor MPE Interiors has been named as the preferred installer of fast-fitting modular ship accommodation in a new partnership with KPM Marine of Birmingham. Cliff Grainger, MPE Interiors director, said his company’s 30-year track record in marine outfitting makes it an ideal partner for KPM. MPE Interiors’ experience with larger vessels, including ferries, also offers KPM Marine further potential growth opportunities. Mr Grainger said: “We’re delighted with this agreement. It means when customers make enquiries with KPM Marine about accommodation products, we will be recommended for installation because of our experience and expertise.” KPM’s modular accommodation system, the 2 Cubed, is currently used on mainly smaller, fast working vessels. The furniture is reconfigurable so boats can be quickly adapted for various uses. The system also has potential to be adapted for a greater variety and size of vessels, including passenger ferries and naval support ships where reconfiguration is frequently needed. www.mpeinteriors.com

DT ENGINEERING UNDERGOES MANAGEMENT RESTRUCTURE
A period of sustained business growth has led Liverpool-based DT Engineering (DTE) to restructure its operations into four distinct divisions, allowing the company to handle trade-specific enquiries more effectively. The four new divisions are: Crane Engineering; Steelwork and Fabrication; Lifting Equipment Engineering and Electrical Engineering, each with its own divisional head. DTE managing director Tom Coyle said: “The recent re-structure of management has seen the business performance become more fluid and clear. The divisional heads were selected as part of plans to deal with a constantly changing environment in which the business operates on a day to day basis.” DT Engineering has recently opened its first satellite depot in Newcastle Upon Tyne. www.dtengineering.org.uk

NEW HOME, NEW TRUSTEES & NEW APPLICATION FOR DANIEL ADAMSON
A £3.6m grant application to restore the 111 year old Daniel Adamson, Merseyside’s most historic ship still afloat, has been submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) after two years of intense preparation. The Daniel Adamson Preservation Society (DAPS), which put together the application, is hoping for a decision by late January, 2015. Dan Cross, DAPS chairman, said: “We’re extremely grateful for HLF’s support while we worked on this second application. We’ve worked extremely hard with our consultants and stakeholders to ensure this application gives our project the full justice it deserves. Meanwhile, the presence of the ‘Danny’ outside the Maritime Museum has brought a new dimension to Liverpool’s historic waterfront and we’re delighted at the public’s superb reaction.” Since opening to the public in late May, nearly 8,000 visitors have toured the ship at her new berth in the Albert Dock adjacent to the Merseyside Maritime Museum. www.danieladamson.co.uk

CAMMELL LAIRD LOOKS TO GRAB A SLICE OF THE BOOMING SCANDINAVIAN MARITIME MARKET
Cammell Laird has appointed Octagone AS shipping consultancy to act as its sole agent in Norway as it  looks to win more repair and conversion work on Norwegian vessels operating around the UK. Paul Ashcroft, Cammell Laird’s technical manager, said the agreement will raise its profile, and the many benefits of using the company, with influential ship owners. Mr Ashcroft explained: “We have always had good relations with Norwegian owners and have done some important work in recent years including a multi-million pound conversion job on the Nexans Skagerrak, cable laying vessel. […] We see a real market to win more of this kind of conversion work, including offshore pipe and cable-laying vessels.” www.clbh.co.uk

PORT OF LIVERPOOL TARGETS PLYWOOD
Peel Ports has opened its new Liverpool Plywood Terminal barely six months after it struck a deal with Westfal-Larsen Shipping to bring combined shipments of steel and plywood into the Port on a new Far East service. The new 80,000 sq.ft  terminal at Seaforth will be temperature-controlled and will radically reduce costs and increase efficiency for construction firms operating in the north of the UK. Roy Merryweather, business development manager at Peel Ports said: “Our decision to invest in this new, bespoke terminal reflects our commitment to customers and our determination to reinforce the strategic importance of the Port of Liverpool. [….] The Liverpool Plywood Terminal is a great supply chain solution because it allows imported plywood to be distributed to sites north of Birmingham without costly road and rail transport, allowing our customers to benefit from substantial cost and carbon savings.”

PEEL PORTS GOES FOR THE TREBLE
Peel Ports Group has been awarded the prestigious Pension Quality Mark PLUS in recognition of its outstanding employee pension scheme, one of fewer than 100 companies in the UK to have received the award from NAPF, the National Association of Pension Funds.
