Yes, it’s only Thursday and not quite the month end yet, but there’s so much good news coming our way that we simply can’t wait. Here then, is the best of July’s news, plated up as a tasty chef-style reduction, to give you a richer, more concentrated flavour in super-quick time. The good news is that we’ll be looking to increase the frequency of the newsletter to fortnightly after the summer in order to accommodate the volume, so please do keep your news coming in.

PEEL PORTS REACHES CONSTRUCTION MILESTONE ON LIVERPOOL2
Peel Ports has reached a major milestone in the construction of its new deep water container terminal Liverpool2, having achieved:
• Phase 1 of infilling to reclaim 12 hectares of intertidal area completed
• 1.43 million tonnes of sand and silt deposited from dredged material
• The near completion of piling for a 700m quay wall
• Programme working around 10 metre tidal range – second highest in UK

FLYNN REFRIGERATION TO SUPPLY EGYPTIAN DRILLING COMPANY JACKUP RIGS
Flynn Refrigeration is to supply refrigeration and air-conditioning products to jackup rigs operated by the Egyptian Drilling Company (EDC). The deal has already generated work supplying two EDC jack-up rigs located in Gabon, West Africa, and the Red Sea, Egypt. Carolyn Flynn, who co-owns the company with husband Alex, said: “We were introduced to EDC through one of our long-standing maritime clients. EDC has now included us on its vendor list which has already led to our first contracts supplying refrigeration spare parts and fan motors to jackup rigs. Mrs Flynn added: “We have expanded our product portfolio with a new range of bespoke marine evaporators, condensers and air-conditioning systems. [….] Critically, they can operate in extreme temperatures and harsh dusty environments frequently experienced in the Middle East. SEAKING ELECTRICAL APPOINTED TO MERSEY FERRIES FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT
SeaKing Electrical has been appointed to a four-year framework agreement for Mersey Ferries. The Birkenhead based firm, which employs around 125 engineers, has been formally accepted onto the marine engineering consultants framework for Mersey Ferries until 2019. SeaKing MD Dave Gillam said: “We are delighted to secure such a prestigious long-term agreement with Mersey Ferries. [….] Our USP lies in the high quality, range and flexibility of our service, combined with the knowledge and experience of staff.”
SeaKing will be providing Mersey Ferries with a complete marine electrical engineering service, involving high-skill design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance.” www.seakinggroup.co.uk

PORT OF LIVERPOOL TO CREATE 47 JOBS AT NEW £100M BIOMASS FACILITY
Port operator Peel Ports is to create 47 new jobs at a new £100m biomass handling facility in a deal
with the Drax power station in Yorkshire. The deal will see Peel handle up to 3m tonnes of wood pellets a year imported from North America. Up to 300 jobs will be created during construction of the facility. The biomass terminal will include a rail loading facility and storage capacity for 100,000 tonnes. Mark Whitworth, CEO of Peel Ports, said: “Our new relationship with Drax illustrates the importance of east/west connectivity in driving growth and creating jobs in the North of England. In addition it shows how globally important assets such as the Port of Liverpool can be used to unlock the potential of the Northern Powerhouse by helping businesses like Drax ensure the security of their supply by putting in place well thought out global supply chains.” www.peelports.com

BEECH GROUP REBRANDS CONSULTANCY DIVISION AS OBSIDIAN ENVIRONMENTAL
In a move to provide a separate identity for its geo-environmental consultancy division, Beech Group has rebranded Beech Consultancy to Obsidian Environmental. The company is currently noise and vibration monitoring for blue chip clients, helping other clients with waste management licences and permits, preparing a feasibility strategy to raise and dispose of an 80 tonne sunken boat and doing a vast project to infill a former quarry. www.obsidianenvironmental.co.uk / www.beech-group.co.uk

EXIS TECH LAUNCHES NEW WEB SERVICE FOR DANGEROUS GOODS VALIDATION AND DATA INTEGRATION
Exis Technologies has launched a new web service that allows companies to integrate current dangerous goods regulations into computer-based systems. Hazcheck Web Service is a web API based version of Hazcheck Toolkits, a set of dangerous goods data packages and routines for incorporation into existing cargo booking, handling, ERP and planning systems used by container lines and ports. JAMES FISHER MARINE SETS UP NEW OFFICE AT ORBISENERGY
James Fisher Marine Services has set up an office in the OrbisEnergy hub in Lowestoft to build relationships with offshore wind developers and raise the profile of its services and its offshore support vessel, Dart Fisher. BIBBY HYDROMAP ADOPT QPS QIMERA
Specialist survey and seabed mapping company Bibby HydroMap has announced the integration of Qimera, a new bathymetry processing application from QPS, into its Management System, the first survey company in the UK to do so. ALTRAD NSG WINS MAJOR CENTRICA ENERGY OFFSHORE CONTRACT
Access and industrial services specialist Altrad NSG has been awarded a multi-million pound offshore contract by Centrica Energy. The business, which operates across the UK, has won a five-year contract with Centrica to provide access solutions, repair and maintenance services on both onshore and offshore projects, creating 50 new jobs. Altrad NSG managing director Mike Carr said: “This is our first major offshore contract and is a significant milestone for the business. […] Offshore work provides a fantastic opportunity for us as we continue to build on our complete maintenance solution approach and we are now looking towards the North Sea to expand the offshore division of the business.” Deeside-headquartered Altrad NSG is one of the UK’s leading multi-discipline providers of contract services and employs more than 500 people nationwide. WEIGHTMANS IN MERGER TALKS WITH YORKSHIRE RIVAL
Liverpool law firm Weightmans is in late stage talks to merge with Yorkshire- based Ford & Warren, with a view to completing a merger of the two firms in July 2015. If the deal goes ahead, the merged firm will have 187 partners and over 1,400 staff. www.weightmans.com

PEEL SUBMITS PLANS FOR LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PARK
Peel Logistics, a division of Peel Land & Property, has submitted plans to build a huge 175,000 sq ft industrial unit in South Liverpool in preparation for the opening later this year of Liverpool2, the new deep water container terminal at the Port of Liverpool. Peel Ports, another division of the Peel group, aims to attract new business away from the congested south coast ports and into Liverpool following opening of the new terminal, which can handle some of the world’s biggest container ships; with an increased demand for industrial and logistics space. Matthew Fitton, development director at Peel Logistics, said: “Peel Logistics is committed to bringing forward development opportunities within the portfolio and the submission of the full planning application is an example of us preparing oven-ready sites.”

JAMES TROOP SUPPLIES NEW ENGINE TO HISTORIC VESSEL KATHLEEN & MAY
Merseyside-based engine specialist James Troop & Co has supplied a brand new Volvo Penta engine to the Kathleen & May, the last British-built wooden hull three-mast top sail schooner still in operation. Working in collaboration with Cammell Laird, the D13 450 brake horsepower engine, along with a new generator, was successfully fitted on the vessel at its mooring at Liverpool’s Albert Dock. James Troop’s operations director Robert Pollock said: “As a Merseyside maritime business we were immensely proud to support the Kathleen & May Heritage Trust. The Kathleen & May has become synonymous with Liverpool and the Albert Dock in recent years so it was a special assignment for us. The engine we supplied is massively more powerful, more efficient and more eco-friendly than the original one which was no longer fit for purpose.”

MARITIME AND OIL & GAS ENGINEERS TO GET PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BOOST
Matchtech and the IMarEST have announced a partnership to support the professional development of engineers working in the maritime and oil and gas sectors. The partnership will allow Matchtech’s registered users to gain a complimentary 12 month membership of the IMarEST and work towards a professional qualification, such as Chartered status. The move aims to redress the fact that of the 2.7 million self-declared engineers working in the UK, only 230,00 are currently registered with a Professional Engineering Institution. RECORD RESULTS FOR RS CLARE
Lubricants and road marking specialist RS Clare has achieved record results for the third year running, turning over 32.04m in the year to Dec 2014, up from £27.33m the previous year.
Exports now account for £9.67m of the company’s sales, up from £9.61m previously.
RS Clare makes high performance lubricants and greases for major oil, gas, rail and marine companies, while its surface coatings division produces road markings and anti-skid surfacing products for use on roads, or also on board vessels such as car ferries.

ENGINEERING EDUCATION SCHEME SEEKS STUDENT PLACEMENTS FIRMS FOR 2016
The Engineering Education Scheme (EES) has celebrated its 30th year with a Science and Engineering day which saw 21 schools and 100 students from across the North West compete in an event hosted by the University of Liverpool. The EES is the UK’s foremost programme for identifying young science and engineering talent among 16/17 year olds, allowing them to work for six months on a real commercial project with a local company. Examples of the complex projects tackled this year included students working with Siemens on a Vehicular Speed Detection device, with Ansaldo NES on a Nuclear Waste Levelling System and with Sellafield on Silo Decommissioning. Marine lifejackets firm International Safety Products’ MD John Rogers and commercial director Geoff Billington have stepped down following a buyout of the business by UK maritime group Safety and Survival Systems International (3Si). Their retirement comes after 13 years in which they successfully steered the business to a £9m turnover with 100 staff. Elsewhere, CTI Corporate Travel International has appointed Clive Wratten as Sales and Marketing Director and specialist maritime and engineering PR agency Polaris Media has appointed Wirral journalist Chris Amery to the team as senior account manager.
