It may be a little quieter than usual for many of our members during August but there’s still plenty good stuff going on and every reason to get another e-zine out before the month is over. MERSEY MARITIME AT LONDON INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING WEEK (7-11 SEPT)
Mersey Maritime will be hosting a high level reception in London next month as part of LISW15. The ‘Mersey-on-the-Thames’ event will be held in association with a number of our key partners, including Peel Ports, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool Football Club and law firm DWF. Already billed as ‘one of the most exciting events of LISW’, Mersey–on-the-Thames is designed to showcase the opportunities that exist for doing business with the Liverpool city region and celebrate Liverpool’s “first rate credentials” as a maritime city that is “open for business”. FLYNN REFRIGERATION APPOINTED OFFICIAL SUPPLIER FOR GERMAN REFRIGERATION FIRM ROLLER
Birkenhead refrigeration and air-conditioning specialist Flynn has been appointed as an official supplier for German refrigeration firm Roller. As part of the deal, Flynn will act as a worldwide distributor for Roller’s marine and offshore products. POLARIS MEDIA LAUNCHES NEW UK-OMAN NEWS WEBSITE
Merseyside PR firm Polaris Media is appealing to Mersey Maritime members trading in Oman to get in touch about a new website it has launched highlighting news between the UK and Oman.
Supported via a regular e-newsletter and a range of social media channels, Oman-GB News will share articles about British companies supporting economic growth in Oman and important commercial and industrial developments. Director Ben Pinnington said: “OmanGB News aims to provide a platform to promote the historic trading relationship between Britain and Oman. MPE INTERIORS COMPLETES TUG SUPPLY VESSEL FIT OUT
Merseyside-based ship interiors specialist MPE has completed a fit-out in Sunderland of the 1400DWT tug supply vessel Sentinel Ranger for UK Docks Marine Services. MPE director John Whetnall said: “This was a job which had to be turned around quickly and efficiently. We manufactured and installed crew cabins with new furniture including bedding and wardrobes. We also built and installed wet spaces with new washing and lavatory facilities.”
MPE has established a fine reputation in the installation and manufacture of ship interiors, with a track record that includes work on ferries, military ships and superyachts. The company’s turnover is in excess of £2m and it employs more than 30 staff at its Birkenhead base. www.mpeinteriors.com
PEEL PORTS SIGNS NEW FREIGHT ROUTE DEAL TO CONNECT PORT OF LIVERPOOL WITH GREENOCK, BELFAST AND ROTTERDAM
Peel Ports has signed a deal with shipping operator BG Freight Line for a new freight service connecting Greenock, Belfast and Rotterdam with the port’s new £300m Liverpool2 terminal, which is due to become operational at the end of 2015. The route will open up global opportunities for Scottish exporters, particularly in the food and drink, chemical and advanced manufacturing sectors. The new terminal could revolutionise the UK logistics market by handling much of the imported freight that currently comes in through south coast ports. It will also give Scottish firms direct access to the UK’s main trade hub with North America, which is Scotland’s number one export market.

IPS MARINE FABRICATIONS COMPLETES WORK ON STENA FERRIES
Birkenhead-based IPS Marine Fabrications has delivered a package of insulation and fabrication work on Stena Line’s two Ro-Pax Superfast ferries VII and VIII, while the vessels continued to sail between Belfast and Cairnryan in Ireland, ensuring no operational downtime. The firm is run by marine engineering specialists Paul Smith and Peter Hillan. The work involved the design, manufacture and installation of high-temperature marine insulation pads for equipment including thermal oil and main exhaust piping. The engineers also reinforced the galley areas with marine-grade steel fabrication and replaced numerous insulation pads across both vessels. Mr Smith said: “Our insulation products play a vital role on board vessels helping to protect against hazardous fuel leaks and fire, which can of course prove extremely dangerous at sea.” www.ipsmarine.co.uk
SEAKING ELECTRICAL STRIKES DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH FINNISH TECH FIRM
Marine electrical firm SeaKing Electrical has signed a deal to be the official UK distributor for Finnish oil technology firm Valmet. The deal will see SeaKing provide a first-line response operation providing engineers to install and maintain Valmet’s automation systems.
The company will also support Valmet with supply chain management, leading teams of sub-contractors and co-ordinating projects. SeaKing MD Dave Gillam said: “This partnership will play a vital role in the development of new skills and broaden our understanding of progressive technologies that bring benefits to customers. ACL ATTEND TOPPING OUT CEREMONY AT NEW LIVERPOOL HQ
ACL’s managing director Ian Higby has attended a topping out ceremony for his company’s new HQ on Duke Street, Liverpool. Designed by DLA Design, the building will be the city’s first purpose-built shipping HQ since the development of the Grade II-listed India Buildings in 1924. The four-storey property is situated directly opposite the Bibby Line Group HQ and has adopted the Georgian proportions of existing buildings on the street while providing a “contemporary and distinctive façade”. 160 staff will move into the 62,000 sq ft property in 2016.
Ian Higby said: “We have reached a very important milestone not just in the construction of this fine building but also in the continuing commitment of ACL to Liverpool, the city and the port.” ACL has almost doubled its Liverpool staff in the last few years with further growth anticipated once the shipping line’s newbuild fleet comes into service from autumn 2015. www.aclcargo.com
ALTRAD NSG SECURES £16.5M NORTH WEST CONTRACT RENEWALS
Scaffolding and industrial services specialist Altrad NSG has secured multi-million pound contract renewals with two of the UK’s leading chemicals firms, helping to secure up to 165 jobs. The three-year contracts with INOVYN ChlorVinyls and Tata Chemicals have a combined value of up to £16.5m. Mike Carr, MD at Altrad NSG, said: “Our collaborative approach, experience and expertise has allowed us to develop excellent long-term relationships with INOVYN ChlorVinyls and Tata Chemicals, evidenced by the fact we’ve been working with INOVYN ChlorVinyls in Runcorn for more than 20 years now.”

Mersey Maritime hotel partner the HARD DAYS NIGHT HOTEL on North John Street, Liverpool, has been sold to international hotel chain Millennium & Copthorne Hotels for £13.8m in cash, almost £3m more than the reported asking price of £11m. PEEL GROUP has announced a long-term agreement with Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s lenders that will underpin a major investment programme at the airport over the next five years. The new financial arrangement will support the strong operational performance of LJLA, as well as its future growth. Steven Underwood, Peel Group chief executive, said: “The future of Liverpool John Lennon Airport is strategically important to Peel, the wider city-region and, indeed, the Northern Powerhouse as a whole.”

JAMES TROOP SUPPLIES TWO NEW VOLVO PENTA ENGINES TO MERSEY PILOT BOAT
Merseyside-based engine specialist James Troop & Co has secured a deal with Peel Ports to supply two Volvo Penta D9 engines to one of Liverpool’s River Mersey pilot boats, the Fulmar. The Fulmar, one of eight pilot boats on the Mersey, pilots vessels in and out of the river, including the Port of Liverpool, the docks at Garston and the locks to the Manchester Ship Canal.

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) has strengthened its expansion in the Asia-Pacific region by appointing David Kelly, previously Head of Marketing at IMarEST’s London headquarters, as Director of Asia-Pacific. The new position, based in Singapore, will support the existing Asia-Pacific team to drive growth and awareness of the Institute in the region.
