GUEST PRESENTATION BY: PROF JANET HEMINGWAY, LIVERPOOL SCHOOL OF TROPICAL MEDICINE & PHILIPPA TUBB, MD WELL TRAVELLED CLINICS
November’s F2F on Tuesday 3 November allowed our audience the opportunity to hear from Professor Janet Hemingway CBE, Director of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in the field of tropical medicine.
It will probably come as no surprise to learn that LSTM was founded in 1898 by an influential shipping magnate, Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, at a time when Liverpool had begun trading extensively with regions such as West and Southern Africa. Given LSTM’s maritime heritage, it has recently partnered with Mersey Maritime to re-establish those links and explore opportunities to work with the region’s maritime industry more closely.
Janet and Philippa provided an overview of the fascinating and world-leading work the LSTM undertakes in the fight against disease and mortality across the globe including LSTM’s significant contribution to helping battle the Ebola crisis. Philippa introduced the range of services LSTM’s Well Travelled Clinic can provide to local businesses in terms of occupational health and international travel, including travel to disease-endemic countries.
