Sea Level Research

In 2012 scientist Dr Simon Holgate developed a new environmental data handling system and recognised it had potential marine applications. A colleague suggested he contact Mersey Maritime to gain access to contacts within the maritime sector to help refine his product and bring it to market.

Our Sector Development Programme has supported Sea Level Research in gaining valuable contacts within the industry including putting Simon together with a business mentor who has become an enthusiastic champion for his company.

Sea Level Research is currently conducting a project in association with the Port of Liverpool and Liverpool Pilots, gathering data to demonstrate the cost savings delivered by SLR’s sea level prediction product, Pilot Planner.

Simon said: “Mersey Maritime has provided Sea Level Research with tremendous support, opening doors and linking us with people and ideas we may never have arrived at by ourselves.  We already knew we had the basis of a great product back in 2012 but the ERDF-funded business support programme has really helped us to drive things forward. Even now, two years on, Mersey Maritime continue to remain actively involved in our development.”

Liverpool Bulk Liquids

“Funding from the ERDF is playing a pivotal role in helping to unlock the potential of maritime businesses across the region.” Paul Maxwell, Liverpool Bulk Liquids.

Liverpool Bulk Liquids (LBL) is a fast emerging maritime firm located at West Langton Dock in the Port of Liverpool. The firm has a solid reputation in trading and storing bulk vegetable oils and fats used in energy applications and has a turnover of £1.9m. Eager to expand the business, LBL identified an opportunity to buy a redundant tank storage in Birkenhead. Major funding was needed to complete the takeover. LBL turned to Mersey Maritime for help.

Paul Maxwell, Managing Director of LBL, says the guidance provided by Mersey Maritime, has helped increase the firm’s storage capacity fivefold and created new employment opportunities. He said: “We had a small window of opportunity to put our expansion plan in place and we needed decisive action, along with a substantial amount of funding. Mersey Maritime immediately put us in touch with an advisor at NatWest who allowed the expansion to become a reality. The also put us in contact with Sefton Council, which awarded us an £18,000 grant for a new steam boiler.

Mr Maxwell said the expansion will allow LBL to take advantage of new markets and product opportunities, boosting both turnover and employment. He added: “ERDF funding is playing a pivotal role in helping to unlock the potential of maritime businesses across the region.“The future is extremely bright for LBL. The support we received, has been thorough from start to finish. We have been opened up to a network of contacts which would have been difficult to establish ourselves in the timescale.”

ContainerPort

“Mersey Maritime brought the European Space Agency to a seminar on Merseyside and we were able to pitch our services to them. It gave us an excellent opening that we’d have struggled to create ourselves.” James Douglas, ContainerPort“

ContainerPort is one of Merseyside’s most exciting high tech businesses. The Liverpool based firm has developed a web based system that uses GPS and Smartphone technology to track the movement of cargo containers and integrates this data with their customers’ business processes.

ContainerPort Managing Director James Douglas said the funding Mersey Maritime receives from ERDF to assist maritime sector companies has proved vital in opening up opportunities to promote the firm’s technology to new markets. He said.”Mersey Maritime has played a key role in helping us to develop our business. Mersey Maritime has gone out and proactively found relevant businesses in its network that can help us.”

“Mersey Maritime helped us to find companies who were prepared to write letters of support. The companies included port operators, shipping companies and road haulage suppliers. The support the ERDF programme has given us, via Mersey Maritime, has been enormously helpful and we cannot praise the programme highly enough.”

Testimonials

Royal HaskoningDHV is a global engineering and project design consultancy with 6500 staff working in 150 companies, but we’ve been something of a sleeping giant in Liverpool. We decided to upgrade our membership to the Executive Club this year because that’s where we need to be: fully engaged in the cluster, with a place at the table and positioned as first choice company for new business opportunities within our areas of expertise.
Jamie Gray, Associate Director, Royal HaskoningDHV
Mersey Maritime has brought the community together tremendously well.
Colin Kershaw, Brookes Bell
Around 30% of our turnover comes from the maritime travel market including crew and security business, so we were extremely keen to be part of something with a specific maritime industry focus. We don’t currently have a Liverpool base however we do have significant business interests in the region and a Liverpool base is part of our future business plan. Membership is therefore a great way for us to grow our business in the area and stay in touch with what’s going on.
Sally Crotty, Client Services Director, Incorporate Travel Management
Mersey Maritime provides excellent networking opportunities, allowing people to meet people, and they do exceptionally well on training and skills. My only criticism is that companies want more!
James Douglas, ContainerPort
As a fledgling business with big aspirations for success, joining Mersey Maritime has been absolutely the right move for us. It’s meant we haven’t had to start from scratch, knocking on doors and trying to get access to the right people. Through Mersey Maritime, we’ve attended business events like Face-2-Face and have already been able to meet everyone who’s anyone in this region. It’s the best investment we have made this year!
John Bean, Managing Director, Geo Data Systems
Mersey Maritime is unique, there’s nothing else like it!
Phil James, Weightmans LLP
Mersey Maritime is doing so much for the community and its succession planning for business is vitally important. It’s great to see Liverpool coming back as a global player – all power to your elbow!
Simon Reynish, Chairman, CILT North West
Back in 2008, the average age profile of the workforce at Cammell Laird was 47; so we recognised the need to address a potential skills gap up ahead. As a result of close collaboration with Mersey Maritime we‘ve committed to a long-term training programme that has seen our apprentice numbers rise from zero to more than 100. It’s put us in a much stronger position. We’re in better shape to plan for growth, we’re fulfilling a commitment to provide jobs for young people in this region and we’re revitalising the way we run our business.
John Syvret, CEO, Cammell Laird Group
I come out of Mersey Maritime’s meetings with a bit of a buzz. Lots of people with the same energy and we can see what’s ahead and we want to be ready for it, be a part of it.
Tom Coyle, Managing Director, DT Engineering Limited
